Crime

Our belief is that crime anywhere in Durham hurts all of Durham, from the safety of the community to the education of children, and the strength of our economy.

Durham County saw a 26% drop in its “Top 8 Crimes” during the first six months of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024, shrinking from 42 incidents to just 31. The categories involved include murder, sex offenses, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny (including vehicle break‑ins), motor vehicle theft, and arson. Additionally, in the first half of 2025, deputies seized 69 firearms, 25 guns were reported stolen, and 17 stolen guns have been recovered. As of mid‑July, the Durham Police Department reported 301 shootings (versus 377 in mid‑July 2024), and the number of people shot dropped from over 130 in 2024 to 92 in 2025

• Shootings by mid‑July: 301 (vs. 377 in 2024)
